They are doing background check on residents of Tent City #4 in Redmond, but no checks on those they want house in Ballard. The same standards should apply everywhere. SHARE and the pastor are really screwing this up by saying one thing one day, something else the next. If they refuse to do the simple work of conducting background checks then they do not deserve to use the church in Ballard, or anywhere else for that matter.
The pastor needs to rethink his actions. Cowtowing to SHARE, when they neighbors have already said "no", is just going to create more bad blood. And in the meantime, the homeless persons with no criminal records are going to suffer as a result.
Here is a link to the City of Redmond, which just recently issued a permit for St. Jude's Catholic church to host Tent City 4 beginning April 25 for 110 days. NOTE IT REQUIRES WARRANT/SEX OFFENDER CHECKS on page 4 item #10. Tent City 4 is run by SHARE and they do these check for free through the King County Sheriff's office.
If SHARE does them for Tent City 4, then they should do them for all their shelters as contrary to the LIE their representatives told to the citizens of Ballard, there is NO COST TO THEM!

Background checks or not, I'm just not getting the sense that Ballard wants a homeless shelter.
I wonder what other kinds of shelters the church is considering (a shelter for boys, girls, foster kids, families, domestic violence shelters, sheltered workshops, etc..).

Even if the sex offender issue wasn’t a topic, the neighbors of the church should have the right to say no to a hobo motel business. The neighbors have an investment in the community and are responsible citizens. The transient population have mental and substance abuse issues that makes them questionable characters. What’s so hard to understand?

The neighborhood has not said no to the shelter. We are only asking that they meet the same requirements of any other home here. Sex offenders are required by law to be registered. Offender checks provide equal treatment for all offenders without discrimination.

SHARE is irresponsive and irresponsible
