21st Century Viking: Espresso hut a little too Knotty?
Later this month, another espresso hut will open on the corner of 15th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 58th Street. The only difference is that Knotty Bodies Espresso is one of those espresso huts where the baristas are scantily clad.
While I normally don't have a problem with these types of establishments, I have one with this particular espresso hut's location: across from a church and a school.
What has not been said in all the discussion about the upcoming grand opening of Knotty Bodies Espresso is that it is diagonally across the street from St. Alphonsus Church and directly across from St. Alphonsus School. No matter how I look at this, I just find it wrong.
Where was the zoning board when the owners of this establishment decided to open this place? Did anyone in any position of power think that opening a sex-themed business directly across the street from a church and a school was a bad idea?
I like to think that I am a tolerant person. Usually, I believe if a person wants to do something they should have the right to engage in that activity as long as they are not hurting anyone else. At the same time, however, I also believe in being a good neighbor.
I am sure there will be a lot of people who will say that this espresso hut isn't hurting anyone, but opening such a business directly across from a house of worship and an elementary school reveals a distinct lack of respect for the other people in the neighborhood.
Putting an espresso hut where young women are wearing revealing clothing, however "tastefully done," is a deliberate provocation and will certainly upset many of the parishioners and the parents of the children who attend the school.
The owners of Knotty Bodies probably chose their new location next to the 76 gas station because it's a good place for a drive-thru espresso hut, but do they care if it bothers anyone? It sure seems like they don't. If they don't care at all about how their business will affect the other people in the neighborhood, why would we want them in Ballard?
Some might say this is a textbook case of "if you get offended, it's your problem." But if this is not in poor taste, I don’t know what is. I can’t be the only one who is bothered by the current location of this espresso stand, but what can be done about it?
I can vote with my ballot or my wallet, and their business plan doesn't make me want to support Knotty Bodies Espresso. If you don’t want a business like this in Ballard, make your feelings known by buying your espresso elsewhere.

Very poor taste
I completely agree that this location is in very poor taste. It is directly across the street from elementary school playground and kids will most likely be able to see the baristas as well as their gawkers. Furthermore, in addition to a church and elementary school, there is the convent with 8 or so nuns located on the grounds. Where's the outrage Ballard?
Barista Bar
Right across from an elementary school? I think the business owners of this espresso hut may open up being faced with some outrage from parents. I wonder how long they will be in business.
Grounds for Scandal
Now I know I sound like such a prude, but honestly...is the economy so bad that coffee sellers need to resort to "sex sells" to pimp their Iced Frappuccinos?
These stands have been cropping up quite a bit lately, to the point where "regular" espresso stands need to sport a "family friendly" sign to let potential patrons know they'll be able to get their coffee and pastries, not coffee and pasties.
We already have establishments to facilitate this sort of gratuitous meat parade; setting it up for all to see, whether they want to or not (including young children) is just plain irresponsible.
I've noticed a couple of these stands along Highway 9 on my drive to work from Snohomish to Woodinville; this area is mainly populated with residential areas and schools. Who is their target audience? Suburban dads in minivans and big-eyed school boys for whom "cream in your coffee" has taken on a whole new meaning.
With espresso stands literally on every corner, I know business must be tough and competition tight, but in that case, why bother to build a new stand at all?
Why not just take your business into the already-established sex industry?
Something to sip on.
Bikinis do not equal "meat parade"
I don't see what the big deal is. They are women in bikinis. Women can be seen wearing just as little clothing at any park your kids are playing at during the summer. Should women in bikinis not be allowed at Green Lake or Golden Gardens? Swimsuits are not a "meat parade." I just wish we could get some fair play and have some men in speedos make me my latte every once in a while.
Don't have to watch out for the bikini's
Don't worry about the women in bikini's, worry about the priests at the school. They seem to get off without prosecution!
Guest over it
Really people, if you really cared then you wouldn't allow your kids in school, or the mall, or how about a news stand, where there are women barely dressed on the covers. Parents just get over it for christ sake.
